    Hotel Daily Deals: Insights from Asian Consumers

    Given that Asia accounts for more than half of the world’s population and its hotels are thriving, this study analyzes the attitudes toward daily deal offers of hotel guests in five Asian nations. While the respondents, from China, India, Indonesia, Korea, and Japan, have many common attitudes regarding daily deals, certain differences stand out. Overall, it becomes clear that frequent guests take advantage of the discounts offered in daily deals, thus confirming concerns of cannibalization. Worse, those frequent guests reported that they felt as though they were treated differently due to their use of the daily deal, and this gave them a diminished view of the hotel. On the other hand, respondents from most nations said that they took the opportunity of the deal to spend more money than usual during their hotel stay, and they were happy to recommend the hotel to their friends, a phenomenon known as being a market maven. Moreover, use of the daily deal did not seem to interfere with guests’ loyalty levels, which seemed to be the same for daily deal purchasers and those who did not use such offers. One other downside to offering daily deals is that the survey indicates a reduced value perception for those who purchase numerous deals, indicating that the deal’s charm eventually fades. While the findings seem contradictory in some ways, they also provide guidelines for hoteliers who wish to target Asian consumers with these types of deals while also avoiding the pitfalls

    $ or Dollars: Effects of Menu-price Formats on Restaurant Checks

    Empirical research on menu design and price presentation has focused primarily on menus’ effects on consumers’ attitudes, and not necessarily on actual purchase behavior. This study examines how customers reacted to menus’ price formatting in terms of actual sales, as measured by check totals for lunch at St. Andrew’s, the restaurant at the Culinary Institute of America, in Hyde Park, New York. Price formats tested in the study were a dollars and cents numerical format with a dollar sign ($00.00), a numerical format without a dollar sign (00.), and scripted or written-out prices (zero dollars). While the numerical manipulation did not significantly affect total spending when compared to such non-menu factors as party size or length of time at the table, the price formats did show noticeable differences. Contrary to expectations, guests given the numeral-only menu spent significantly more than those who received a menu with prices showing a dollar sign or those whose menus had prices written out in words. Psychological theory, by contrast, predicted that the scripted format would draw higher sales. Although these findings may apply only to lunch at this particular restaurant, they indicate that menu-price formats do influence customers’ spending, both in terms of total check and spending per cover

    Tipping is generally regarded in the industry as more of a server concern than a managerial one. For this reason, it is the rare restaurant executive or manager who tries to actively influence the level of his or her servers’ tip incomes. I believe that is a mistake --that restaurant executives and managers can and should increase their servers’ tip incomes. First, I present several tactics that servers can use to increase their own tips. Then, I describe the role that executives and managers can play in encouraging servers’ use of these tactics.     Specificity of facial expression labeling deficits in childhood psychopathology

    Background: We examined whether face-emotion labeling deficits are illness-specific or an epiphenomenon of generalized impairment in pediatric psychiatric disorders involving mood and behavioral dysregulation. Method: Two hundred fifty-two youths (7-18 years old) completed child and adult facial expression recognition subtests from the Diagnostic Analysis of Nonverbal Accuracy (DANVA) instrument. Forty-two participants had bipolar disorder (BD), 39 had severe mood dysregulation (SMD; i.e., chronic irritability, hyperarousal without manic episodes), 44 had anxiety and/or major depressive disorders (ANX/MDD), 35 had attention-deficit/hyperactivity and/or conduct disorder (ADHD/CD), and 92 were controls. Dependent measures were number of errors labeling happy, angry, sad, or fearful emotions. Results: BD patients made more errors than ANX/MDD, ADHD/CD, or controls when labeling all emotional expressions, whether those expressions were on the faces of children or adults. SMD also showed emotion-labeling deficits, in particular as compared to ANX/MDD patients and controls. Conclusions: Face-emotion labeling deficits differentiate BD and SMD patients from those with ANX/MDD or ADHD/CD and controls. The extent to which such deficits cause vs. result from emotional dysregulation requires further study

    Advanced demand and a critical analysis of revenue management

The framework introduces the concept of acquisition and valuation risks and suggests that advanced demand distribution is rooted in the trade off between them. Furthermore, since advanced buyers may not consume, firms may be able to re-sell capacity relinquished. The study then proposes how refunds could provide additional revenue to firms. The study further suggests theoretical reasons why and when service firms are able to practice revenue management, suggesting that RM tools such as overbooking and demand forecasting may not be the only tools for higher revenue

    Extended search for the invisible axion with the axion dark matter experiment

    This Letter reports on a cavity haloscope search for dark matter axions in the Galactic halo in the mass range 2.81–3.31μeV. This search utilizes the combination of a low-noise Josephson parametric amplifier and a large-cavity haloscope to achieve unprecedented sensitivity across this mass range. This search excludes the full range of axion-photon coupling values predicted in benchmark models of the invisible axion that solve the strong CP problem of quantum chromodynamics

    Variability of Disk Emission in Pre-Main Sequence and Related Stars. I. HD 31648 and HD 163296 - Isolated Herbig Ae Stars Driving Herbig-Haro Flows

    Infrared photometry and spectroscopy covering a time span of a quarter century are presented for HD 31648 (MWC 480) and HD 163296 (MWC 275). Both are isolated Herbig Ae stars that exhibit signs of active accretion, including driving bipolar flows with embedded Herbig-Haro (HH) objects. HD 163296 was found to be relatively quiescent photometrically in its inner disk region, with the exception of a major increase in emitted flux in a broad wavelength region centered near 3 microns in 2002. In contrast, HD 31648 has exhibited sporadic changes in the entire 3-13 micron region throughout this span of time. In both stars the changes in the 1-5 micron flux indicate structural changes in the region of the disk near the dust sublimation zone, possibly causing its distance from the star to vary with time. Repeated thermal cycling through this region will result in the preferential survival of large grains, and an increase in the degree of crystallinity. The variability observed in these objects has important consequences for the interpretation of other types of observations.     Faith-based Institutions as Venues for Obesity Prevention

    Purpose of review: To critique the scope and value of recent studies with a focus on obesity-related health promotion in faith organizations. Recent findings: Electronic database searches, scanning of the reference lists of identified articles, and hand searching of journals for articles written in English and published in 2013-16, revealed 16 studies. Half of the studies involved African-Americans, in churches and with predominantly female participants. Research among other ethnic groups was more likely to be exploratory. All of the 11 studies reporting the impact of programs on weight-related measures showed favourable outcomes. However due to study limitations (small sample size; short duration; attrition), significant unbiased effects cannot yet be concluded for most of the interventions reviewed. Study strengths included application of theory in community engagement, and detailed description of cultural tailoring. Summary: Faith organizations show promise as settings for obesity prevention among high-risk groups, particularly African-Americans. Support for progressing formative work to adequately powered, randomized controlled trials is vital. Wider involvement of diverse faith settings, and targeting obesity in men and childhood, would be valuable developments
